site-wide and per-post/page email notifications for all new comments, or only for replies to ones comment(s)
i'm aware of Suggestion for new comments platform and Remove the Commenting system from Core but this may still be applicable
Wouldn't this exhaust the bandwidth of those who have limited bandwidth on their hosting plan?
i think there are definitely some concerns, bandwidth possibly being one, though how big would an email be in this case, especially if the number of chars were limited
i think the bigger issue might be EMAIL :) especially for those on a shared box
my thinking however is; if we're going to have comments so people can engage, and to encourage people to engage, what's the point of commenting and then not being notified when someone replies to your comment
given the potential pitfalls with mail however, maybe this would be best done as a plugin, but i'd personalty much rather it be a CP coded/endorsed plug where there are zero privacy concerns
They will have to setup the email to an external provider. Which is a good practice for security purposes but very complicated to setup ( I have it this way and I don't use my server to send and receive mails and if the server goes down the mail still works but... but... is a pain in the butt to set it up).And I don't see why the website should provide such kind of notifications. Someone who is interested in a discussion s/he can bookmark the article and check it from time to time. No one wants to receive email notifications for each and every comment s/he posts online.
I wrote a function for this a while back that sends out an email when the comment is approved and again when someone replies.
Having this as a core feature would be a great improvement overall.I can post a link to the gist if someone needs it.
@thesnippet.dev please do post a link to the gist that achieves this function.
Here it is:
The code is old and I have not reviewed it for well over 2 years.
"And I don't see why the website should provide such kind of notifications. Someone who is interested in a discussion s/he can bookmark the article and check it from time to time. No one wants to receive email notifications for each and every comment s/he posts online."
It's not sustainable to bookmark every discussion I'm taking part in and find my way back – I'd have a million bookmarks if that were the case. I do want to receive an email each and every time a new comment is posted to a thread in which I've participated – with the ability to opt-out on a thread-by-thread basis, of course.
After auditioning a handful of plugins, I ended up using Lightweight Subscribe to Comments, but, I'd love to see this as a core feature. If the comments implementation is missing one thing, it's notifications.
@Code Potent Better have a million bookmarks than receive a million notification emails. ( said the ascended spiritual web master! ha ha ha ha )
